Tools
Irazu 2D (FDEM), Stanstead Granite

Context

Investigated thermally induced fracturing and stress evolution in a granite host rock surrounding heated waste canisters in a deep geological repository.

Approach

Built a coupled thermo-mechanical finite-discrete element (FDEM) model in Irazu 2D using Stanstead Granite parameters, and ran a parametric analysis across five temperature scenarios.

Outcome

Evaluated how rising canister temperatures drive damage initiation and stress redistribution in the near field of the repository.
